Martin Hines 1948-2011

Silverstone, UK – Sunday, August 28, 2011; Martin Hines, the karting legend and motorsport icon universally known as Mr Karting, has died at the age of 65 following a battle with cancer.

Martin passed away peacefully at The London Clinic on Sunday morning with his family by his bedside.

A triple FIA World Karting Champion, in 1983, 1991 and 1992, five-time European and six-time British Champion, Martin was one of the best karters Britain ever produced but his unparalleled reputation and influence transcended the ranks of world class motorsport.

Widely acknowledged as 'Mr Karting' and the 'Karting Guru', Martin founded the careers of numerous British racing champions including Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, David Coulthard, Gary Paffett, Anthony Davidson and Jason Plato to name a few.

His Zip Kart company has been at the pinnacle of the industry since its birth in 1946. Martin also secured the long-term future of the Grand Prix Racewear emporium following his acquisition of the company’s assets in February 2009.

Martin leaves his wife Tina, daughter Tuesday and son Luke, who is a successful racing driver in his own right having achieved notable successful across touring and sportscar racing.
